Pinterest is blowing up!

This newly popular social bookmarking site has recently had an incredible explosion in popularity. Used primarily by women, Pinterest has become a major traffic driver for lifestyle magazine sites, such as marthastewart.com, and brands such as Whole Foods or West Elm, as seen above.

Reportedly, President Obama is even hopping on the pinning train! I would guess that he won’t have quite as many wedding and “DIY” inspiration boards as the average pinner… But it will be interesting to see whether or not political candidates find a use for this platform! With the explosion of Obama’s Facebook and Twitter use in the 2008 election (and earlier, by other, less successful candidates), will Pinterest become the new medium for grassroots campaigns? Or is it better left to those users fantasizing about future trips, healthy recipes and dream weddings?
